Re: First version
Just grabed these quick shots of the back of the rotor, and the locating holes are just visible, see pic:

Re: First version
Ah, apologies John, I misunderstood your question.
I'll have a close look at mine in that area, and post some photos if I find anything interesting.

Re: First version
To add: I have just seen another restored 2nd version's rotor with the exact same mark that mine has, so I have asked the owner for info on the type of bail trip spring he found under the baffle plate.
I will let you know the moment he answers (if he gets back to me of course).

Re: First version
It is my understanding that there was some talk during those days of slightly loose bail arms, and that the loop type was better? Did Mitchell introduce the loop wire to correct the 'inferior' early one, and therefore offer a replacement (any service bulletins on this I wonder). Who knows, but it do...

Re: First version
Hi John, I already have a shot of the rotor (see below). To be honest, because the rotor had the suspected alloy gear with the thin brass insert, and everything about the body and rotor (paint finish etc) suggested to me that they were original to each other, I wondered if that part had been changed...

Re: First version
I just found this thread and I remember watching the auction, congrats on winning it John. One thing that has me puzzled though, is the bail arm spring type in your 1st version. This is the same type as in my recently acquired 2nd version, but I see Wallace's has the v shaped spring. Does anyone her...

Re: Cover plate foundry markings
Thank you John, though I may have been hasty in my claim of having a 1st version spool on the reel (maybe I should have said "what looks like a first version spool, from my internet observations"), but here it is anyway.
The spool feels (and sounds) like it's made from metal.

Re: Cover plate foundry markings
I forgot to add:
The 2nd version has a 1st version spool (I'm guessing this is quite normal?).
Ok, I'm off now to open up a delivery of lowly Intrepids (am I allowed to say that word here
) . Cheers!

No problem John, it was a facinating journey.
Here are the two reels in question:

Re: Cover plate foundry markings
Other detail found in the second version were a transfer gear with a brass 'insert'? And two brass shims under each of the slider guide tabs.

Re: Cover plate foundry markings
Carrying on from the foundry marks discussion in the 'Intersting 3rd' thread, I have photographed the internals of my recently acquired 2nd and early 3rd version reels, plus a couple of other interesting details.

Re: Interesting "3rd"
Yes, I am really looking forward to getting stuck into those two. I will of course take a lot of photos and share them all with you (hoping they will be everything they should be). I will confess to being a little concernd that the main body of my reel may be from a slightly later one (not the first...

Re: Interesting "3rd"
I also noticed some differences in the 'Made in France' castings. My version seems to appear on later 3rd versions, but I haven't managed to compile enough images of very early ones to come to any firm conclusions.

Re: Interesting "3rd"
Hi John,
Well, curiosity got the better of me, and I stripped my reel down to check the foundry marks, and I was a little surprised seeing no foundry mark in the body???
However, it looks like the gear/cover plate is the same as yours, well almost.

Re: Interesting "3rd"
I didn't think to check that detail when I had it apart, but certainly, when I get the two incoming reels on my workbench, I will also strip down that reel in question and photograph the foundry stamps for you (I'll photograph them all), so that should be before the end of the week, if that's ok? I ...

Re: Interesting "3rd"
Thank you John, they will be cherished, believe me (sorry for hijacking your thread, just over enthusiasm on my part I'm afraid).
Enjoyed your post too Bill.
If it's ok with you John, I would like to post some photos I took during the service I did on my own early 3rd version?

Re: 1979 letter prefix on a UK market Mitchell 410A
Ah! I hadn't thought of that, so yes, that could be the answer; a 1978 model.
Thank you for your reply.

Re: Interesting "3rd"
Yes, that was me. I won them both on Friday, so as you can imagine, I am pretty excited to get a close look at them and add them to my collection. Added to which, having lost every 2nd version I bid for over the past year, I truly didn't expect to win that one plus a 3rd version at the same time, so...

1979 letter prefix on a UK market Mitchell 410A
Hi everyone. I was making note of the serial numbers of my small Mitchell collection, and found what I think is the letter i (I) on my 1979 410A. I dated it to 79 because of the unique handle lock of that time (assuming it is original to this reel of course; if so, not an 'L'), which stayed the same...

Re: Interesting "3rd"
Hi John, Thank you for your kind welcome and your answer to my question. I have a few of the more obvious 3rd versions, with the slotted baffle plate etc, and I was quite excited to snag this earlier one with its dumpy line guide and different bail arm spring (as per the earliest ones from photos I ...

Re: Interesting "3rd"
My first post, so hopefully I have posted it in the correct place, if not, my apologies) I also have exactly the same details on my own recently acquired half bail (plus plain baffle plate etc). The ad said it was an early 3rd, but maybe it is a late second version? No serial number. The bail wire i...
