don309,
That part 82425 doesn't seem to be overly abundant on the net. I have a guy, Dick Janak, that has always had what I needed many times over the years, co you could check with him. His email is [email protected] ,I believe.

Re: Good Surprise!

Schrack, Sounds like a reasonable price for a 300, but the serial number along doesn't define the reel as "rare". You may be referring to some Wallace's statements about the "Pilot Reel". There are several requirements that a reel must meet to be one of those prized reels. That's...

Re: Help

Greetings Stephenv,
:text-welcomeconfetti: to the Mitchell Reel Museum.

The Mitchell half bails were made back in the 40's up till around 1953, and were replaced by the common full bail.
Here's a pic of a page from the operating manual about using the reel. I hope this is some help.

Re: Transfer Gear Rub

Baron2, I bought my first M300 in 1963, so I'm considered a senior citizen of a bygone era. Over the years, since that first purchase, I've gone through several hundred 300's. Some I bought to use, some to collect, and some I picked up to do some service on, sell to either fishermen, or collectors. ...

Mitchell 300 Spring Question

Mates, I had a conversation with a fellow recently when the subject of M300 reels came up. He said he hated the reel because the bail springs kept braking. I told him that I had fished with the same 300 for decades and had never had a broken spring. I did, occasionally, have to make some adjustments...

Baron2,
The left. That is the type lever that I was talking about. According to Wallace's book, that anti-reverse was used till it was changed to a straight lever.

Bill, I 100% agree.

Schrack, It sounds like you have developed a real interest in the Mitchell 300 reels. In my opinion, it's time for you to consider buying the book" The Mitchell Classic 300 Spinning Reel: 1939-1989" written by Wallace. It can answer most of questions about changes to the reel and when they...

Baron2, I believe that, somewhere in this string, I saw your faceplate with the a/r that had 3 flat edges on the back of the a/r lever. That lever was used from the around 1962 up till 1967. My earlier post was just a guess, but if your a/r lever is made like that it could be up till 1967. A view of...

Baron2,
I've owned several 6th gen 300s with that type of anti-reverse lever that were made around 1962/63. Is it possible that your reel has been submerged in salt water? It shows more corrosion than I usually see around where I live.

Fishabout, Since I concentrated on just 300s, I never had more than 40-50 Mitchells. That included duplicates that I traded or sold to fishermen. Today, with downsizing, around 15-20. I'm getting up there in age, so not wanting to make it difficult for family if I was to become fishing bait. :...

Chris Ball,
Thanks for giving the reason on the sling shot. That's what I had suspected, but never seen it used like you guys are doing. I could see that getting the bait in the water that way, might prevent the bait from coming loose as in a normal cast. Interesting!

Very nice find.
I consider the pilot/prototype reel a rare reel to obtain. They all came with level-wind gearing, and dark blue metal knobs. Yours has higher serial number than most than range about 5000 less.

Your Mitchell is one that was produced around 1950/1951, and has type of engraving that they used in those days. It would be considered a 4th version if it has a full bail.
