Post by gear91351 »

Hi
Can anyone tell me the year of my 308 by the SN? And anything about my reel.

Yes, a little…that SN is from about 1962-63…I can tell you more definitively when I get back in town. From the two photos everything looks stock from those years including the spring loaded crank handle counterweight, crank handle grasp, bail arm, line guide screw, drag nut and model number engraving positioning, The inside should have a black Delrin oscillation slide block and a number 2 molded into the housing of the body as a casting identifier. They are considered by most to be second versions with no FRONCE on the body. It should also have smaller casting digits on the bottom of the rotating head. There are a number of other characteristics common only to this era, but more obscure then needed here.

By this time, Mitchell had ramped up production on this UL model pretty significantly since it’s inception in 1959 (again, need to check my records to know how many but I’m thinking 75K by then, per year, off the top of my head), so not particularly uncommon, but definitely uncommon in exceptional condition. They are quite a find in excellent to unused condition with box and papers. These were the last of the Mitchell boxes written in script lettering.
