Hello Mates, raining here in Pa. not much to do but tinker with fishing gear. While I'm at it I have a question that someone may have an answer to. Does the red screw on some 408 side covers have any special meaning, such as if the gears are brass or not. Maybe someone has an answer, tight lines to all Oscillator1/ John

Hello John,

good question , I would say to give the reel a better look .
The red screw was used untill 1974 .

best regards

Hello Dries, I did take my 408 apart for a cleaning and lube for the start of trout season here in Pa. Mine does have the brass gears ,helical cut I think is what they call them. That really doesn't prove anything though. Maybe one of the Mates can come up with a more definite answer. Tight lines and good fishing to all. Oscillator1 , John
