What appears to be a 300/400 reversible spool has turned up here in the UK.

Does anyone have any idea what it is for, or has anyone seen one before?

The writing on it is in French and English.

I don't have an image re-sizer on this computer so I can't load an image, sorry .... but the spool can be seen on this UK forum post.

Unable to follow the link. Perhaps you have a cartridge spool?

Ah, it is a limited membership forum, but I thought you could access that post, sorry.

It looks a lot like a normal late 300 spool but has 'teeth' on the inner rim of the outed spool edge....to connect with a clicker spring when the spool is put in reversed.

As far as I can see it would make the spool suitable, for example, for both a 300 and a 301....but then the standard spool fitted both anyway!

I may have found a resizer...can you see the teeth now?

John,
It is a cartridge spool. There is an old post about strange (?) spool on a 330 Otomatic Arca. That should help. I had the same questions when I first found one.

The droiter side is for right handed reel. Flip it over and it is spooled and ready for a left handed reel. Don't remember what word is left in French.

Thanks for that.

The French word for left handed is gaucher, One of our memebrs found it on an early advert for the third version about reels for the left handed.

So a cartridge spool....I can't see the point, but there we are.

Wayne is correct.

These spools are commonly found with auto-bail reels. A label reads : This spool is a Mitchell cartridge on it's adaptor. In order to make your fishing even easier Mitchell makes available cartridges already filled with Starlon line.

The idea, of course, is that a loaded spool can be used on left or right hand wind reels without being re-wound. Particularly useful with pre-wound spools, but otherwise of little advantage.

The idea clearly didn't take off.

Regards,

Rolands.

Even a unique tub then....I'd never heard of them.

They must have been around for a while because I have now seen thin button and wide flat button release versions.

There's even one on eBay in France.
